Riga Black Balsam
When people talk about bars in Colorado Springs, Principal’s Office tends to come up for a reason. We like spirits with personality, the kind that challenge you a little. Riga Black Balsam fits the bill perfectly.
Born in Latvia in 1752, this dark and herbal liqueur is layered with botanicals, roots, and spice. It’s not here to play nice. It’s here to make an impression.
This month, it’s the backbone of one of our favorite creations: The Sorcerer’s Sip.
Sorcerer’s Sip
Recipe #1: Sorcerer’s Sip
Ingredients
1.5 oz Rittenhouse Rye
1 oz Riga Black Balsam
0.75 oz Maple Syrup
3 dashes Orange Bitters
3 dashes Walnut Bitters
Method
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice and stir until chilled.
Strain over a large rock (bonus points for vampire teeth) in a rocks glass.
Garnish with a rosemary sprig.
Flavor Study
The Sorcerer’s Sip walks the line between warmth and mystery. Rye spice collides with the deep herbal bite of Balsam. Maple softens the edges, while bitters and rosemary bring it all into focus. It’s dark, balanced, and a little bit dangerous.
